Throughout 2018 and 2019 Confident Drivers made monthly donations to Speed of Sight, the Big Learner Relay, YMCA and also our local homeless charity.
Our aim with the creation of the Confident Drivers website was to not only help learner drivers and driving instructors but also to raise money for charity at the same time.
We first heard Mike Newman CEO of Speed of Sight speak at a driving instructors event back in 2017. We remembered seeing him on the BBC News in relation to one of his World record challenges and it was great to hear his story of being a blind person with a desire to drive at speed! We loved the idea of offering driving experiences to those with disabilities who are unable to obtain a driving license.
When we launched the Confident Drivers website in July 2018 we immediately committed to regularly donating to charity, with Speed of Sight being our default charity each month. As the business continued we were delighted to make a more formal guaranteed monthly donation as part of the Inspire 25 group and look forward to continuing to support them in other ways as the business grows.
Homelessness is a growing issue in our local area and anywhere that we visit and so we knew this was an area of inequality that we wished to donate to as well with a Christmas donation each year.
In Nov each year driving instructors come together to support Children in Need by turning their cars spotty and joining in a relay around the UK. Confident Drivers is delighted to have been able to make donations in 2018 & 2019 and looks forward to continuing in the future. In addition, Kev takes part in the relay and was delighted to be the lead car of the relay between Aylesbury and Milton Keynes in 2019.
Speed of Sight is the only UK charity offering the gift of driving to blind and disabled people. You can find out more on their website https://www.speedofsight.org .
Kev had the opportunity to experience driving while blindfolded in one of the Speed of Sight adapted vehicles, you can see his experience in the video below and hear about it in this podcast episode.
